7-year-old arrested and charged with arson after family’s home intentionally set on fire
A 7-year-old boy was arrested and charged with first-degree arson after allegedly setting fire to his family’s home, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department in West Virginia said.
The department said the child deliberately set fire to the house with his parents. Everyone inside made it out alive, but two people suffered minor burns.
The department shared a photo of the house engulfed in flames on Facebook, saying no further information was available due to the ongoing investigation and the sensitive nature of the case.
In West Virginia, Charges may be filed against children. By citation or by criminal complaint, but laws governing juvenile arrests vary by state. In 2022, New York Governor Kathy Hochol Signed into legislation That prevents children under the age of 12 from facing arrest and prosecution for nearly all crimes in the state.
