PPP rejects Sindh local govt by-election schedule

Chairman of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Bilawal Bhutto Zardari Peer drew criticism from Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) for rejecting by-elections scheduled for Sindh’s local body polls, demanding the foreign minister to “recognize reality”.

Addressing the foundation stone laying ceremony of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases at Korangi, Karachi, Bilawal mentioned his government’s efforts to upgrade health facilities in Sindh.

Countering those who say his party has done nothing for the people of the province, Bilawal said: “We have set up a network of hospitals across the province. This network of hospitals provides world-class healthcare. Provides free maintenance.

He said that NICBD of Sindh can compete with any hospital in India, USA or UK.

The PPP chairman alleged that the ‘health cards’ offered in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) are nothing but a scam.

In the name of health card, people’s money is being given to private insurance companies instead of hospitals.

Furthermore, he said: “I appeal to a certain political party to abandon its extremist ideologies and politics of hatred.”

Talking about the by-elections in the metropolis, he said that they were supposed to be held almost a year ago.

“While the first phase was done on time; however, seeing that the PPP was winning the second phase, they continuously delayed the second phase citing various excuses.

PPP Chairman said that for the first time, PPP has conducted a clean sweep in Hyderabad and Karachi divisions.

He said that local body elections have been held but there are no representatives. If the elections were held on time, the elected representatives of the people would have been there to help them in flood situations.

Who is stopping the people from getting their representatives into power? “We reject this mockery of the schedule,” he asked.

He requested Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Law Minister Murtaza Wahab to challenge the schedule in the Sindh High Court.

These powers cannot bear, the mayor of Karachi will be of the People’s Party. However, soon the mayor of Karachi will be Jayala.

It should be clear that Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Recently, the schedule of elections for 93 local body seats in different categories has been announced in Sindh.

Due to the death of the candidates, the elections could not be held in those constituencies of Karachi and Hyderabad divisions where local body elections were held in January.

As per the schedule candidates can submit nomination papers between 20th to 22nd March and scrutiny of nomination papers will be done till 28th March.

In response to Bilawal’s statement J.I Leader Hafiz Naeem criticized the leader of People’s Party. “Bilawal sir, accept the facts,” said Hafiz Naeem, adding that even after doing everything in power, the PPP could not secure a majority vote.

Taking Bilawal with open arms, he said, “Don’t be afraid of the by-elections.”

He further said that if you were in such a hurry, why were the local elections delayed for two and a half years?

Hafiz Naeem concluded by saying that the mayor of Karachi will be from his party.
