Chicago family fights ‘pro squatter’ who took over dead mom’s home, left bullet hole in window
Oh A woman from Chicago She said a squatter with a long criminal history had taken over her dead mother’s house and refused to leave since September.
Darthula Young told CBS Chicago This week when she received a call from neighbors in September that there had been a shooting inside the Chatham neighborhood home that her mother had left to the family after she died.
When Young got home, the locks had been changed and there was a bullet hole in the front window, she told the outlet.
“The guy that was shot in the apartment — this guy named Taketo Murray — came back from the hospital, and told us and the police that he lives there now, that he has rights — that he has a job,” Young said. He was a squatter.”

“It was a nightmare,” Young said.
CBS Chicago reported that Murray has been arrested at least six times since 2017 on drug and weapons charges and that the shop was able to confront Murray outside the home.
“I’m in the process of finding a place to live,” Murray told the outlet. “You can’t move like that.”

Murray claims he plans to leave sometime in April or May, but Young said he routinely claims to leave early and then stays.
“Every time I go there, he tells me he’s leaving in two weeks,” Young said. “He’s leaving in two weeks. He can’t find a place.”
“So you admit that it was his mother’s building—that his mother owned it?” reporter Charlie DeMar asked Murray.
“Yeah, I guess I admit — his mom and his siblings, it was their building,” Murray replied. He said he was renting the property from one of Young’s siblings but could not provide proof.

Young said the city hasn’t shut off the water because someone is technically living there, and she’s paying the $1,300 bill.
Michael Zink, A Landlord Tenant Lawyer who is not involved in the case, told the outlet that it can take six to eight months to evict squatters in Chicago through the legal system.

“The problem with the police is that when they show a scene like this, they don’t know who’s telling the truth,” Zink said.
Zink said the sit-in trend is growing in Chicago. Fox News Digital reported. Earlier this month, fakirs in the same Chatham neighborhood occupied the house of another woman’s deceased mother and claimed they were living there legally.
