Michigan juvenile jail administrator fired over alleged 12-year-old boy’s sexual assault

Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility Deputy Director of Administration Mark Rowland was fired Friday. Detroit Free Press reported on Friday. He had been working at the facility since September.

The shooting comes as authorities investigate allegations that youths sexually assaulted a 12-year-old boy at the facility on Wednesday. State police are investigating and so far seven juvenile jail employees have been suspended.

Roland told the newspaper that the shooting surprised him. He said that until Thursday they were part of the improvement plan.

“I’m not sure why they came to that decision,” Rowland said. “My hope would have been that they would have kept the current team for consistency.”
Meanwhile on Friday, facilities director Brandon Barber was reassigned to another county job. Tiffany Jackson, County spokeswomandid not provide a position and the newspaper could not reach Barber for comment.

The Free Press reported that the prison is overcrowded and understaffed, with juveniles held in cells for long periods of time and denied bathing, recreation, medication and schooling.
