The first sample of polio virus of the year came out in Lahore
On January 24, Minister of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination Abdul Qadir Patel confirmed the detection of wild polio virus in the country for the first time in 2023.
However, the virus has been found in its sewage water from time to time. The Pakistan Polio Laboratory of the National Institute of Health (NIH) said that the polio virus found in Gulshan Ravi’s sample has been traced to Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province since last November.
Meanwhile, Patel said the two “countries are united in the fight against the virus and are working together to end it”.
He renewed the government’s commitment to completely eradicate this epidemic from the country.
He added that while the isolation of the virus was a cause for concern, it was great to note that it was detected so quickly. “Timely detection of the virus in the environment was crucial to prevent children from being paralyzed by the poliovirus.”
Stressing the need to vaccinate children on time, the minister said: “The only way to prevent the virus is to vaccinate all children under the age of five. It is extremely important that parents and caregivers, Especially in Lahore, make sure their child gets vaccinated in the February round.”
