China’s president to visit Russia in apparent show of support for Putin

The Kremlin confirmed the visit, saying it would be “at the invitation of Vladimir Putin.”

The Kremlin said Xi and Putin would discuss “issues of further development of comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction between Russia and China”.

The Russian government added that the meeting would “help deepen Russian-Chinese cooperation in the international arena.”

The two leaders will also sign “important bilateral documents”, the statement said.

China is determined to act in its own interests while most of the world has condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which marked one year last month.

Xi has refused to condemn Moscow’s attack but has called for a peaceful solution. China has also called on the international community to recognize and respect the sovereignty of Russia over its territory, which Russia claims includes parts of Ukraine.

Beijing has repeatedly condemned the US and NATO for prodding Russia.

Putin invited Xi to visit Russia in late December.
