Canada suspect in cop killings had prior mental health call
Officers were called to a family fight but there was no indication that the call was more threatening or dangerous or that the teenager had a gun, officials said.
“When the two officers arrived, they were met by a 55-year-old female complainant outside the complex. The two officers then responded to the suit along with her 73-year-old male companion and their 16-year-old son, where she lived. ” the police said in a statement.
“Shortly after arriving at the suite, the two constables were shot multiple times by a 16-year-old male, and were immediately incapacitated. The mother and son reportedly had an argument over firearms, and the suspect He shot his mother and took his own life.The father was not physically injured during the shooting.
Police said the mother remained unresponsive at the hospital and has not yet been interviewed. Police said the father is cooperating with the investigation.
Police identified the slain officers as Travis Jordan, 35, who had been with the Edmonton force for 8 1/2 years, and Brett Ryan, 30, an officer for 5 1/2 years.
Edmonton police are also investigating a shooting at a nearby Pizza Hut earlier in the week. It is not known if this is related.
These are the first fatalities for the Edmonton Police Service since an officer was shot and killed in 2015. Earlier in 1990, an officer was shot dead.
