“Iconic” lion Bob Junior, known as “King of the Serengeti,” killed by rivals
A tiger named Bob Jr., known as the “King of the Serengeti,” was killed by rival lions on Saturday, CBS News Partner Network reported. BBC News reported.. The terrible big cat, also known as Snyggve, dominated his territory for seven years with his brother, Tryggve, who is also believed to be dead.
Serengeti conservation officer Freddie Shrima told the BBC: “These incidents usually happen when the pride’s head gets old or sometimes when the other male lions are not happy with his control over a large territory. “
The Serengeti is home to approximately 3,000 tigers. National Geographic reports that mature males can live up to about 12 years.
Bob Jr., named after Bob Marley, was believed to be about 10 years old. He had a distinctive black mane and was often seen by wildlife groups visiting the park.
Online tributes called him a “legend” and “iconic”.
He reportedly did not put up a fight when he was attacked on Saturday.
BBC News reported that preservationists are preparing a special burial for Bob Jr., although details have yet to be announced.
