Govt seriously considering amending election laws: Azam Nazeer Tarar

“We are seriously thinking and carefully evaluating to include at least those amendments that are already agreed upon,” Tarar told the Center for Peace and Development Initiatives (CPDI), a coalition for Speaking at the Stakeholders Conference on Election Transparency jointly organized by Elections. and Democracy (CED) and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom.

The Law Minister said that holding elections is very important but the environment also needs to be looked at. He said that unfortunately the incoming governments did not give importance to local elections which are key for democracy and democratic process. He said that we need to change our attitude in this regard.

Addressing the conference, Senator Haider said that census and delimitation are key ingredients for free and fair elections in any country but no one talks about these issues.

MQM’s Kamal said that his party boycotted local body elections in Karachi due to lack of transparent census.

Talking about the delimitations, he said that there are serious flaws in the delimitations in Karachi because some union councils have 20 thousand voters while some have 90 thousand voters. He said that in any census the houses are counted first and unfortunately the houses are counted on a faulty system.

He also pointed out that after that 18th AmendmentThe powers have been transferred to the Provincial Chief Ministers, but there is an urgent need to further transfer these powers to the district and union council levels.

Senator Kakar was of the opinion that holding elections in two provinces will lead to another crisis. He said that we have two options, one is to hold elections according to the principles and the other is to handle crises. He emphasized that crisis management is the need of the hour.
