Video shows shooting in Ecuador, not Pakistan

A video has been viewed thousands of times in social media posts claiming to show gunmen attacking a family in Karachi. However, the video has been shared in the wrong context. It depicts the shooting taking place in May 2022 in Ecuador.

“Indiscriminate firing on a family over red apple and Baloch ice cream in Gulistan-Johar. Father lost his life. No one is safe in Karachi,” read an Urdu-language tweet posted on September 10, 2022.

The 20-second video, which has garnered more than 6,500 views, shows two men wearing black baseball caps approaching a car and opening fire. A woman and a child inside the vehicle were mixed up during the shooting, before the assailants fled.

The video has been viewed more than 2,200 times after being shared in posts on Twitter and Facebook alike.

The posts were circulating after Sindh Police Chief Ghulam Nabi Memon called an emergency meeting on the rise in street crime in Karachi, Pakistan’s most populous city.

However, the video has been shared in the wrong context.

Murder of Ecuador

A reverse image search and keyword search yielded footage of the shooting Tweet by the Metro Ecuador Newspaper of May 13, 2022.

The 28-second clip shows the attack from a wide angle.

The Spanish-language tweet read: “A business owner was shot inside his car while he was with his family in Santa Elena.”

El Universo, another Ecuadorian newspaper, published A screenshot of footage in a report that says the attack took place on May 12, 2022, in the 25 de Septembre neighborhood of La Libertad, a town in Santa Elena province.

“Terrorism engulfed the residents of the 25 de Septembre neighborhood in the town of La Libertad on Thursday afternoon,” the Spanish-language report said.

“A man in a gray vehicle parked outside a restaurant with his wife and daughter was shot by suspected assailants.”

El Universo newspaper later Reported That person succumbed to his injuries.

A representative of the public prosecutor’s office in Ecuador told AFP that the attack in the video took place at the 25 de September market in La Libertad.

Karachi Police also tweeted a statement denying that “fake videos” were made in Karachi.
