Stefanos Tsitsipas suffers shock first-round loss to Daniel Galán at US Open
Tsitsipas lost his chance to claim the world No. 1 title after a spectacular clash at the Louis Armstrong Stadium, where world No. 94 Galán won on his ninth match point.
Winning the opening set by just seven points, Tsitsipas lost the first 11 games to the Colombian before picking up his game and winning the third set.
“I think he started to play better in the third set. He played a lot better than the first two and I was serving on the court but not pressuring him. He was always in control. ” said Gillan.
“I think he was feeling very comfortable during those two sets. I tried to change the position a little bit on the return and it was too much of a change because I was able to come back. [deeper] And he wasn’t as aggressive on the first ball, so I was able to do something else.”
Although Tsitsipas fought hard in the fourth, he was unable to stop the Colombian, with Galán taking the set and the match.
“He dominated the match,” Tsitsipas said after the event. “I just couldn’t get into it.”
Meanwhile, Galan said his US Open main draw debut was “definitely the best match of my career, not only because of the conditions, but also the opponent. I’m really happy.”
Gillan will next face Jordan Thompson of Australia.
