Ghana declares end to Marburg virus outbreak

Ghana has declared the end of an outbreak of the Marburg virus, a similar highly contagious disease. To Ebolawas confirmed in July, the president’s office said Monday.
Marburg, Ghana There was a second outbreak in West Africa. The first case of the virus was found in Guinea last year, with no further cases identified.

“The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has officially declared Ghana free of the Marburg virus disease that was confirmed almost two months ago,” the presidency tweeted on Monday.

The Ghanaian government confirmed the first outbreak of the disease on July 17.
A total of three cases have been confirmed, two of which were fatal. The third was asymptomatic and recovered.

A dozen large Marburgs have sprung up since 1967, mostly in South and East Africa. According to the World Health Organization, mortality rates in past outbreaks have varied from 24% to 88%, depending on the strain of the virus and case management.
