In some Hindu scriptures the deity is referred to as ‘Svambhu’ or the Self. He is considered the creator of all material things in the universe and the divine architect of the chariots, palaces and weapons of the gods and goddesses. Therefore, every year on Kanya Sankranti Lord Vishwakarma is worshiped by engineers, designers, architects, artisans and sculptors.

It is believed that Vishwakarmaji built the Pushpak Vimana and Suran Lanka for Ravana, as described in the epic Ramayana. According to the epic Mahabharata, he also built the city of Dwarka for Lord Krishna and Indraprastha for the Pandavas.

This occasion has great importance in Hinduism. Unlike other festivals, Vishwakarma Puja is celebrated only for one day. Vishwakarma Puja is determined according to the solar calendar while the dates of other festivals are based on the lunar calendar.
