PM Shehbaz to decide on army chief’s appointment after talks with Nawaz Sharif: Khurram Dastgir

• The Minister of Energy says that the decision will be taken by the Prime Minister.
• The Defense Minister says that no process has been started to extend the tenure of the Army Chief.
• He further said that in November any Prime Minister will have to decide on the nomination of the next Army Chief.

Gujranwala: Energy Minister Khurram Dastgir has said on Saturday that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will decide on the appointment of the Army Chief after consulting with party chief Nawaz Sharif in London.

While holding a press conference in Gujranwala, the Energy Minister said without naming PTI Chairman Imran Khan that no matter how many times Imran Khan meets the Army Chief, the Prime Minister will take the final decision.

Defense Minister on the other hand Khawaja Asif He said that no process has been started to extend the tenure of the Army Chief and no proposal has come out in this regard.

He expressed these views while holding a press conference in Islamabad.

A day ago, the former prime minister, while giving an interview to a private TV channel, suggested that the appointment of the army chief should be postponed until the government is elected, after which a new army chief should be chosen.

Talking about the appointment of the army, Asif said that the policy is in line with the constitution as any incumbent prime minister has to decide on the nomination of the next army chief in November.

He said that Nawaz Sharif did this act four times and Shahbaz Sharif will do it this time.

Asif added that “this issue was never popular in the media and Imran Khan played a very negative role in this regard”.

The Defense Minister said that this is a constitutional procedure and it should be done on time. He said that the army chief has his loyalty to the state and its constitution. No one should question it.

He alleged that national security and the stature of the nation were under constant attack and that Khan was a national criminal for sabotaging relief efforts and withholding aid to Pakistan from international agencies.

The defense minister said the prime minister would convene a meeting of the National Security Committee after his return and “issues related to Khan’s statements threatening national security” would be discussed.
