Man convicted of murdering ex-Texas Tech star

A Dallas County jury deliberated for nearly four hours before convicting Larry Dacan Jenkins of the September 2019 murder. Jenkins was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, as prosecutors did not seek the death penalty.
Prosecutors say Jenkins and two other men followed Emmett, 35, from a nightclub to a Dallas home. After parking in his garage, they confronted him and demanded two chains and a watch he was wearing. A witness told police that Jenkins, who police had located at the scene, was the one who shot Emmett before the trio fled.
Police released home surveillance video footage of the crime to get tips on identifying the burglars. Keith Johnson and Michael Lackey were arrested a month after the murder and await trial for murder. Authorities say cellphone data placed Jenkins at the nightclub and at Emmett’s home, and he was arrested a year later.
Emmett was a guard at Texas Tech for four years, three under coach Bob Knight, and held the team career scoring record until his collegiate run ended in 2004.
He never reached those heights in the NBA, playing eight games with the Grizzlies and six with the Nets. He also played two professional seasons in the NBA Development League (now called the G League), three seasons in Europe and two in China before achieving stardom in the Big 3, a three-on-three basketball league that stars And the rapper was founded by Ice Cube. The league retired Emmett’s jersey last month.
